Imagination Sprints™ Case Study

Silver Passport

Introduction

Inspired by NASA's Voyager mission, Silver Passport endeavors to create the next ‘golden record’, digitally preserving ancestral knowledge and fostering intergenerational connections.

Challenge

Their challenge is finding the strategy to implement Silver Passport in Latin America, considering diverse cultural landscapes and stakeholder dynamics, navigating regulatory frameworks, establishing strategic partnerships, and cultivating community engagement.

Opportunity

The Silver Passport could overcome digital divides and include marginalized communities, promote intergenerational learning and cross-cultural interaction, and also encourage mental health support for seniors as well as introduce novel approaches to cognitive memory care.

Vision

The vision is a scalable and inclusive platform that connects older adults and younger generations worldwide. Vibrant online communities thriving with shared wisdom, cultural exchange and support; enriching lives across generations and preserving a valuable heritage for the future.

Research and Analysis

We produced a summary research of digital platforms for multi-generational storytelling and engagement to inform the foundation for our conceptual design. Multiple research sources revealed a deep and growing need for inter-generational connections with significant benefits in knowledge transfer and cognitive health.

Silver Passport feedback: “From day one, the human touch was evident… it exceeded my expectations.”

Narrative Development

This short story is a fast forward look at how people might use the Silver Passport. It describes an experiences based on previous focus group results and the development of the Silver Passport initiative. There could be many immediate benefits of the platform for inter-generational users in the present, but a longview of the features would reveal unexpected treasures in the future we can only imagine today.

Silver Passport feedback: “The language used to display stories in Silver Passport is crafted with empathy and inclusivity. It bridges cultural and temporal gaps, fostering understanding and connection. By using clear, compassionate language, the platform honors each storyteller's voice, preserving their legacy while inspiring and educating future generations.”

Concept Generation

Our first concepts and design artifacts were focused more on the opportunity we saw in developing an experience. The summary research gave us a glimpse of the digital tools for interaction, and the narrative research showed us what a Silver Passport legacy could mean for our cultural futures.

“Be kind. Be present.”

“Sé amable. Aqui. Ahora.”

Imagine a game that required just two players. One would tell a story, the other would listen and record the other. Then they would switch roles. And after a time, they would each pass to a new story partner, collecting stories, categorizing and tagging them, protecting them, and the option to share them anywhere.

And just imagine those two players had to be of different generations, 25+ years apart. They also could not live within 300 miles of each other. In fact, the farther away they are the more extra credits or points they’d get. Players would be rewarded with more access, more features, more archive space.

Now imagine discovering that your last story partner lived 125 years ago.

Silver Passport feedback: “The Silver Passport offers a unique storytelling platform where seniors can record and share their life stories, experiences, and wisdom. This platform not only preserves their legacy but also provides comfort and inspiration to future generations.”

Presentation and Review

We presented our concepts and a teaser video promoting the Silver Passport experience, sharing feedback for their team on next steps, and reviewing possible actions for the next-level. All concepts were intentionally produced for the customer to use in their own content strategy for internal stakeholders and external audiences.

“I would highly recommend this workshop to other organizations, especially those in the early stages of developing ideas that address complex issues. The conceptual design benefits are substantial, for participants from diverse backgrounds and personal journeys.”

Strategic Imagination: Conceptual Design and R&D

Our Imagination Sprints™ are open-ended, speculative, and focused on exploring opportunity in the possibilities. We use them to leverage our strategic imagination and ‘science fiction’ thinking to solve real problems. Our methods encourage your vision to break free from conventional constraints and explore radical ideas that may seem absurd at first, but hold extraordinary treasure.

Embracing a speculative mindset, conceptual design will help you see perspectives through a creative mind first, before your critical thinking hides them from your view. Your first sprint will be an “Aha!” moment, and every sprint after will create insights that are more targeted and strategic—with compounding interest.

Important: This is not a conventional design project with draft designs and multiple iterations for approval. The emphasis is on disrupting the habits of your process with originality while still maintaining a connection to the present and a new, radical empathy for the problems you want to solve or the threats you wish to avoid.

These concepts are meant for discussion and research, like binoculars looking beyond the horizon. They produce results rapidly and provide greater value when repeated using the insights from the previous sprint(s). Strategic imagination is a practice, not an event.

Traditional design and conceptualization processes can be lengthy and costly. Our sprint workshops compress that timeline, focusing on high-value activities to derive meaningful outcomes quickly. Imagination Sprints™ are accelerated discovery exercises for developing your vision and mapping growth.
