Design is a lab for building the future.

Design thinking for science.

Critical to communicating science today is demonstrating the value of research through public outreach and interaction – talking with your 'customers'. But facts alone won't inspire the kind of support that basic research drastically needs in order to make a broader impact.

Design is the process of exploring human needs, desires, and behaviors. Human-centered science communication inspires people to discover more on their own, through a wondrous story in which they are the explorers.

Human-centered design for science communication.

People connect with other people, new ideas, and their own imaginations through stories. If you practice research, you have an incredible story to tell and we want to help you share it with the world. We can create science experiences that invite people into your research story to inspire a community of exponential growth and support.

We work with scientists, research institutes, universities, private foundations, museums and science centers, and government agencies to...

  • Engage public support for basic science research.
  • Discover new and innovative platforms to launch and accelerate R&D labs.
  • Promote science literacy, diversity, and open access.
  • Encourage bold ideas for future generations of pioneers and explorers.

Federal agencies fund only 44% of all basic science research in our country today. Policymakers are frequently rejecting the support of rigorous scientific research when developing important health, safety, and security regulations or legislation. More and more, the need for strong and engaged support for research will have to come from new sources. That means your science needs to reach a small few giving millions and a few million giving small. Your customers.

The engaged, tech-savvy, always-connected, 21st Century audience is evolving faster than science can measure it. It's time for new science communication strategies to captivate the public's imagination through experience and vigorously promote a culture of curiosity with ground-breaking research stories. Invite others to experience the awe of scientific discovery.

Communication with a human perspective means telling a story. The key to engaging fans and followers is to share your science narrative through multiple channels with a user experience (UX) strategy. Design is the research practice which results in an event, a video series, web and mobile apps, mixed reality platforms. All should be created relative to your user's environment, but your science story is the epicenter of all activity.

We apply these core UX principles to everything we do:

  • Always start with a story.
  • Make it usable, useful, and sharable.
  • Don't communicate to the public. Talk with your customers.
  • Sell the problem you solve, not your science.
  • Why you do anything is more engaging than how you do everything.
  • Just start. You won't learn anything until you do.

We know communication.

Before launching this creative agency for science, our network of experts have worked with some of the biggest and most successful brands in technology, media, and research. Let us manage your communication so you can be the pioneers in science.

Frequently Asked Questions

We're a very different kind of agency. Many of us are scientists in our fields of design research and creative practice, but we're not commonly thought of when institutions and organizations think of science communication. That's all about to change. Forever.

+ Who is SpacetimeLabs?

SpacetimeLabs is an expert network of award-winning designers, producers, developers, engineers, communicators, marketers, artists, speakers, fundraisers, business developers, and entrepreneurs. We are based in Alexandria, VA just south of Washington, DC with a global, virtual community. Our founder and CEO is Nic DiPalma, a design entrepreneur with a career spanning educational media, public and cable television, news and information, brand marketing strategy, and web/mobile product development. We build teams around solving your specific problems and teach you the creative thinking skills to discover opportunities for your research.

+ Why do I need this?

You may not think you have the resources to improve or increase your science communication efforts, but you do. In fact, everyone in scientific research and development does, but few know where to begin or recognize the advantage of design thinking for their outreach strategies. If you want to build greater support and understanding with the public or secure a strong future for your research, all you need to begin is a new perspective. You build everything you need as you learn, but you have to start. You won't learn anything until you do.

+ How much do you charge for your services?

We can develop projects to match any investment or budget requirement. We also offer fixed pricing for all of our clients so costs will never increase unless our scope of work increases. Many of our customer engagements are on retainer, a subscription with a fixed fee each month, with access to just one or a few or all of our creative services. Some government or non-profit clients may us to work on an hourly schedule and those rates have a broad range based on the resources requested. Every challenge is different requiring a variety of efforts and levels of expertise.

+ What is your process for designing science experiences?

Just as your budget determines your scope of a project, the same applies to the process for designing solutions to meet your challenges. That said, these steps are critical to discovering and producing the right solutions for you:

  • Empathize
  • Define
  • Ideate
  • Prototype
  • Test
  • Iterate

+ What makes your agency a lab?

Like science, design is never 'finished.' We are always learning, exploring, and iterating our way through new challenges. Collaboration and diversity are our tools for developing projects and programs for developing breakthrough ideas. We research, test, analyze, adapt, adjust, and repeat our cycles as necessary to achieve results.

+ Do you help raise money for research?

Yes, but not as a broker to financing, fundraising, or philanthropy. We help our clients and partners present and pitch their need for greater funding to stakeholders, sponsors, and partners. We also look to the public as a source for support through crowdfunding, donating through social media, e-commerce, and entrepreneurial platforms.

+ How do we get started?

That's easy. Let's have a conversation. It's free and it could save you a lot of money from your budget. Of course, we'd love to be your agency of record, but we may not be the right agency for you right now. Connect with us here and tell us more about your research, your ideas, and your goals. Or you can email us at info@spacetimelabs.co. Regardless, we'll help you get thinking in a new direction. Your future.
